Fall Resources...

I updated the fall theme/unit at Teaching Heart.  Got rid of the dead links and added a few treats too.  You can view it here!

Some of my favorite goodies on the page include.

In this book, your class will learn about different leaves and why they change color. As a class, go on your own leaf hunt in a nearby park. Their are instructions in the back of this book for doing leaf rubbings and for pressing leaves in wax paper.

You can make this into a book or use it in a pocket chart. Cover up
a word and have your students tell you the word that is missing! You can do many
things with these printable cards.

You can make your own or purchase our CD for October -December and use and modify ours to meet your needs. Clcik here to learn about the CD
THE COLORS OF FALL
We see a black cat
We see a red apple
We see a colorful scarecrow
We see an orange pumpkin

Graphing Fun Halloween Style

Trick or Treat? Okay, here's a treat, if you like free printables from Teaching Heart!!!

Above is a fun cut and paste graph I created first for my second grade classroom and later used it with my first grade son. You can use this in your classroom for a fun Halloween activity or use it over the weekend at home to keep your kiddos happy and busy. They won't even know they are learning important graphing skills.
First they cut out the pictures. Next they glue the pictures on their graph. Finally they answer the questions about the graph.

Spooky Cookies Sort & Graph

I found something good at Oriental Trading. They are called Spooky Cookies. They are so cute and they come with a good amount in each package. My kids think they are yummy and at only 7g of sugar per package, I am happy to give them the treat. Perfect Halloween snack for graphing (K-2) and sorting (Prek-1). Of course, I made a sorting sheet and graphing sheet I will share with you. So hop over to Oriental Trading and order those cookies for your class or or a Halloween party. Not only will the kids say yummy, they will be learning too!

Rolling Out Treats and Fun With Idioms.

It has been a rainy weekend here in the Pittsburgh area. I told my daughter yesterday that I wish it would stop raining cats and dogs. She looked at me funny and said... "It is raining water not cats and dogs, Mommy!" I explained to her that I was just saying something silly. My son started in on the conversation and said, like when you say, "My spelling words are a piece of cake?"

One of those a-ha moments for mom: My goodness, my son listens to me... So of course I had to explain to him a big third grade word. IDIOMS! Then I had to read him a fun book that would show him more idioms. My girlfriend who teaches fourth grade, told me about this book. She explained how much her fourth graders enjoy the book. Some of the stuff was over my seven year old's head, but could be explained. I use idioms often, so he enjoyed hearing and seeing the pictures of the ones I often say. Even my husband laughs at me when I tell him he is a card when he says something sarcastic... so he enjoyed the book too.

Since it was raining cats and dogs, we played a dice game about cats and dogs. Both my three year old and seven year old could play this game together. i helped my three year old play.

Basically all you need is dice, two crayons, and this free printable sheet from Teaching Heart.

Children take turns rolling the dice and marking off the cat and dog treats as they go. The first person to color in all their treats is very lucky and has fed their cat or dog well. Once you see the activity sheet, you will see this activity is a piece of cake and a fun way to end a rainy day - it's icing on the cake!
What idioms do you use in your everyday speak?

High Five To The Free Treats From Snapfish...

So excited to tell you about a free offer from Oprah and Snapfish that my friend BETH just told me about... To help you get organized, Snapfish.com is offering The Oprah Winfrey Show viewers a free 8" x 11" custom-cover photo book! - Waaaahoooo!!! I love a free offer and this is a good one. I am such a fan of these books & of Snapfish. I make one each year for each child. It's a digital scrapbook where you can add backgrounds, crop pictures, and add text. Who has time to scrapbook... well, not me anymore due to my addiction to blogging and reading blogs. I have also made these as gifts. When my cousin got married and my kiddos were in the wedding, I made her a book with photos I took at wedding and gave the book the title, Your Wedding Through Our Eyes!!!! So fun! You can also do seasonal ones. In fact, my free one was just that. I took five years of Halloween pictures and put in in one book. I will pack the book away with my fall decorations and bring it out every year. Doing this with past Christmas pics. would be fun too. So, you have the ideas and now you need the know how:

Coupon dispersal ends at 11:59 p.m. PST Friday, November 14, 2008. Free photo book must be redeemed by 11:59 p.m. PST Sunday, November 16, 2008. Offer does not include customary shipping and handling changes or additional pages. Offer applies only to mail-order delivery to U.S. customers. Offer cannot be combined with other coupon codes. Coupon cannot be resold or otherwise transferred and is void on the earlier of redemption or the offer end date.
