Teachers - Blogging the Nice Way?

Just read this article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110216/ap_on_hi_te/us_teacher_suspended_blog
which is about  "A high school English teacher in suburban Philadelphia who was suspended for a profanity-laced blog in which she called her young charges "disengaged, lazy whiners" and some."

I feel that this teacher made a big mistake even if it was legally an okay thing to do.  I think as teachers we take on an unspoken oath somewhat like a Doctor or Lawyer may take.  You just don't talk (blog) about the kids in your classes even if you do not use their names.  As a teacher we must keep grades confidential and we really aren't suppose to discuss students with others.  Although I have seen discussions happen in teacher lounges that really should not happen and I may be guilty of "venting" too...  but blogging about it for the world to read is just ignorant because you know that anyone can read what you put out there.

As teachers don't we have a moral obligation to be role models to our students?  The teacher in this article uses some profane language and is downright a "bucket dipper"!!!  She sure is not modeling the behavior she wants to see out of her students.

What about Teacher Expectations???  I am a big believer that if our expectations are low our results will be low too.  Overall it appears that the majority of research supports the notion that teacher expectancies, whether they are high or low, have a significant impact on overall student achievement.  So the students who were reading this blog, do you think they thought their teachers expectations were high or low???  hmmmm...

So many teachers have websites and blogs today.  Most that I read do not blog about their kids in their classroom.  They blog about things they are doing to help their students learn.  I think that is as far as it should go...  As a teacher if you have a problem with a student; talk to their parents.  Deal with it offline.  Use the internet as a resource and not for selfish reasons.

I am not saying that I do not agree with some of the points she made that were not downright hurtful to her students. In fact, some of her statements I agree with.   I just feel as a teacher you need to be more careful about your comments and if you have a blog, it should be written more to help your students.

I am pretty sure that this teacher is legally okay and is enjoying some paid vacation while she is suspended.  Hopefully, when she returns she will raise her expectations of her students and start thinking of ways she can help her students rather than blog about their faults.  Maybe she will use her online time to search for solutions to her problems and ways to create fun lessons versus spending her time moaning and groaning for the blogging world to read.  Two words for this teacher....  THINK POSITIVE!!!

How do you feel about this?

Pocket Charts

I love using pocket charts and sometimes wonder if I could teach without them. Hmmm??? Many teachers write asking me for pocket chart ideas. As a result, I decided to create this page!  This is the time of year that Walmart puts the pocket charts out for the great price of 9.99 and Target often has smaller ones for .99!!!

Pocket charts can be used for so many purposes. They are great to place center activities in. They are fantastic for posting schedules. I could go on and on. I have utilized them to:

Reconstruct poems, songs and chants

Sequence alphabet or pictorial story lines

List days of the week, months of the year

Word banks for themes or journals

Word tricks such as the,they,them,then/no,not,now

Pattern sentences for reading and journal sentence prompts

Build rhyming word banks

seasonal and thematic vocabulary

Making Words activities

small group instruction - great for resource rooms or special education k-8

SOME TIPS FROM ME:

To store the materials that go along with the many pocket charts I create for centers, I staple ziploc bags to the bottom of the chart. I fill the bags with the materials I need for the certain pocket chart activity. When it is time to take down a given pocket chart, I store all the materials for the pocket chart in a large folder.

You can purchase seasonal pencils and attach a seasonal eraser to the pencil. Use this to have the children point to words on a chart. They enjoy this! Don't sharpen the pencil!

In July, Walmart stocks the regular pocket charts for an awesome price of about $10.00. You can find them in the school supply section of the story. Can't miss this buy!
Often teachers will sell some of their neat-o pocket charts on Ebay. You know the ones that come in the cool shapes? Do a search for pocket charts on www.ebay.com and see what is there. Sometimes you can find a good deal.

Go ahead and cut those Walmart charts to make them fit on the back of tables or where you see needed.

Be sure to check out all the good pocket chart ideas here:

Is that a Broccoli book or Twinkie Book on Your Summer Reading List?

So what do you prefer to read??? Do you like Broccoli books or Twinkie Books the best? Or do you like a mixture of the two? Ok, you may be going, “huh?” Let me explain: back when I first started teaching one of the veteran teachers (Mrs. Boyton – Silver Ridge) made a comment that stuck with me forever. She said she was tired of reading Broccoli books and needed to open a Twinkie Book. She defined a Broccoli book as a book you read to gain new knowledge or learning something from; like, a teaching theory book, a self-help book, or a parenting book. These books are good for your brain, like broccoli is good for your body. The Twinkie book is a book that is a story you read for pure enjoyment, you don’t gain any new knowledge from it, you just enjoy it. Like a Twinkie, it is yummy and not necessarily good for you. It is an indulgence for your mind. I just loved this way of explaining books!

I am mostly a Broccoli book kinda gal! I read some Twinkie books here and there, but Broccoli books are my kind of book. I have been getting together a few books I want to read this summer and guess what, they are all Broccoli books. They happen to be parenting books and one Teacher knowledge type of book. My choices are:

No one suggested this one...  Mom’s Everything Book for Daughters.

It just looked like my kind of book and one I can keep around for the years.  I just read the first chapter and really enjoyed it.  Here is what the back of the book tells us:
"From the whimsical to the heart-to-heart, here is a potpourri of the best, most usable, fun ways to connect with your daughter as you face the issues that concern her together. From helping her enjoy her appearance, to dealing with physical changes and sex, to becoming a lifelong learner, this book is full of frank advice as well as great ideas for

· Chick Chats: Conversations that draw you closer and help her think through an issue · Just for Fun: Whimsical ideas that’ll make you the coolest mom in the universe! · Rave Reviews: Recommended reading your daughter will love (really!) · God, Mom, and Me: Discussions over Scripture that will help you both keep God in the center of the picture · And a whole lot more! "

This next one my girlfriend is reading the girl version of and it sounded really great... sooooo   I decided to get Bringing Up Boys!

If you read the review of this book on Amazon, you will see that he has some very conservative views of things.  It will be interesting to read this and share it with my husband (one of the world's biggest conservatives) as I read.

This next one has been on my shelf for a few months and I have cracked it and it looks great...  Plus an added bonus is that I know the author.  She was one of my college professors who taught an awesome class called Teaching Literature.  I do believe that her class is one of the classes I learned a great deal from while in college.

Many of her approaches and suggestions I used in my classroom and use with my son.  I actually saved my notes from this class and used them in my real classroom.  This book is Toolkit for Teachers of Literacy!

So that's my summer reading list...  What kind of books do you like?  Are you a Twinkie kind-a reader or a Broccoli Lov-a?

I am an elementary school librarian. I received a grant a few years ago to make literacy bags for the kindergartens to check out from the library. I created or found online games to be included in the bags. Over the last few years I have been adding more bags to the library collection. The game CD Rom would be very great resource.

If you are a winner you will need to email me at cgallagher_1999@yahoo.com

Star Marshmallow Math Fun!!!

Happy Fourth of July all!!! I hope this little posts finds you dressed in red, white, and blue! I love July 4th. As a child we spent most of those 4th of July's in Florida with my Grampy. My brother would light off the fire crackers we would buy in South Carolina and I would run from the "loud chase after you ones" he would direct my way. Then of course there was the time that the neighbor boy would light Roman Candles in his mouth as we all sat around in amazement of his bravery that I now realize as stupidity. Yes, I have fond memories of summer nights and fourth of July as a kiddo.

As a parent, I recall being pregnant with my first child on the 4th. My husband had to read the baby inside of me the Declaration of Independence on the 4th. As boring as I find the text to be, I sat through it. Seven years later, he still reads it to my son.

Anyhow, I wanted to repost a fun learning activity that you can use at your 4th of July picnic if you happen to have these here starmallows.

Summer Math Fun!
A break for mommy. Get the marshmallow, hand over the printable sheet and tell your kiddos to have fun!!!

End of The Year Gifts - From the Teacher...

The end of the school year is coming up quickly. I would like to share two great ideas for Teachers to give to their students as a farwell gift and something unique to give to your favorite teacher. The first is a poem (which I wrote that deals with playdoh and ending the year). You print the poem and the printable playdoh recipe on cardstock. Attach it to a can of playdoh and a cookie cutter and you are good to go.

If you are interested in the poem printable, it is found on the Teaching Heart End of Year Packet which you can buy and see here:
http://www.teachingheart.net/endoftheyearpage.html

Here is a picture of my friend Amy's finished play-doh gifts for her preschool class...

Also found on this page is a wrapper to wrap a candybar in for an end of the year treat. This is found at : http://www.teachingheart.net/endoftheyearpage.html

Also, here is a Beach Pail filled with hands-on learning fun. If time allows this week, I will upload the printables that I have in my bucket! So check back...

Getting Through These Last Few Months of Winter...

Wow, feels like winter has been here forever... O, how I look forward to getting outside with the kids again. Going to the parks, going swimming, long walks down to the lake to feed the ducks, bike rides on the trail, & time with friends. It is almost here... I can feel it. Come on Spring!!! While we wait, I wanted to share some products that have gotten us though these winter months. My three year old and six year old love these over and over again! If you need something to get you through the last few weeks of winter, why not give one of our favorites a try!!!

My Six Year Olds Faves:

Above you see my son working on a maze book. He has loved mazes since he was four. This keeps him busy for a good thirty minutes. I have found that the Kumon books are the best. The maze books are colorful and so full of detail to hold his interest. The book he is doing above is about Mazes around the world. They highlight icons in different countries and make a maze out of the icon. The back of the book has a World Map that shows you were each icon is in the world. Just an added bonus. Here is the book we love:

Also my son loves these cutting books. You actually create something out of what you cut. Very cute!!!

The teacher is me highly recommends the Kumon books. You can see more below and Super Fun Mama wrote a great review here.

These are also great practice in the summer months to stay fresh.

One of my Three Year Olds Faves
We love, love, love, love this product!!!! You will see my daughter below playing in the sand. I found these on Amazon and wasn't sure if I should buy one for her for her birthday. I am glad I did. She plays with her mermaid sandbox all day. Yes, you may get sand on your kitchen floor... but live a little! It comes with a thematic mat that I put down on the table and then place the box over the mat. She has a blast filling the little bucket with blue sand and hiding the tiny shells in the sand. All the little pieces you need are included! Around $20 may seem high... but you can do what I did... buy one and then make up other themes yourself using items from the dollar store.

Below are links to some.

I love Leap Frog products and so do my kids... I am not a big fan of sitting the kids in front of the TV. TV is a privilege in my house and usually is earned. I try to limit TV to 1 hour a day for both my kids & usually no TV on Saturdays. My daughter was not aloud to watch TV till her second birthday. There are exceptions; if we are traveling or at a friends house I do not keep track of TV time. Also they often will watch TV when they are at my gym or at the grocery store... those times I do not count. My reason for less TV is research based and is another blog for another day. However, quality shows is what I look for. This DVD below is the best... If you have only one DVD in your house, get this one. We have had it for four years and I my daughter & son knew their letter sounds by 18 months partially due to this DVD.

HERE IS THE REVIEW I WROTE FOR AMAZON A FEW YEARS BACKS:
This is one of the best learning DVD's I have seen. It will be a great watch for the Pre-k to first grade classrooms. The DVD teaches the letter names. Most importantly, it teaches the letter sounds in a creative way. Viewers see the letters, hear the letter names, they see a picture/video that represents the sound each letter makes, and the viewer hears a catchy tune to match the letter sound. For instance, the letter C is shown in a cold environment with ice hanging from it. The letter comes to life by shivering and stating that it is /c/ /c/ /c/.... old. Then the characters in the story sing the catchy Leapfrog song; "The C says/c/, the C says /c/, every letter makes a sound. The C says /c/. This DVD/VHS is marketed towards parents to use with their PreK to First grader, but all teachers need to know about this video and share it with their class. It would be a great review or introduction to letter sounds. Teachers could also use the catchy phrases and visual representation of the letter sounds in their lessons by creating activities or visuals based on the video. Students will see the sounds letters make, hear the sounds, and sing the sounds. This video combined with strong phonics based classroom instruction will help reach a variety of learning styles and lead your students on the path to becoming strong readers.

Reading is a must at our house. We always read to each child at least thirty minutes a day. Now that my six year old can read himself, he also reads to us at least 10 minutes a day. Besides us reading aloud to the kids, here are some of my daughters favorite read alongs. These are great because they are short enough to keep her attention and she can hear the turn the page signal. About three months ago she started reading these independently. All I have to do is turn the CD on.

My son (six years old) is a big fan of the Disney Read Along Sets seen below.

Well, I hope you found something that will make the winter months go by quickly at your house.

Teeth Time

February is Dental Health Month. I thought I would highlight some favorite activities...

My Toothpaste
Got my toothpaste, got my brush,
I won't hurry, I won't rush.
Making sure my teeth are clean,
Front and back and in between.
When I brush for quite a while,
I will have a happy smile!
Tons of ideas at Teaching Heart
Read Andrew's Loose Tooth
The popular storyteller and author of "Love You Forever" shares another funny family tale. Not even the Tooth Fairy can help pull Andrew's loose tooth. But his friend Louis comes up with a special tooth-removing remedy that requires plenty of pepper and a great big sneeze!
Watch Out! Acid Attack

Why do I have to brush my teeth is a common question asked by kids. And of course we explain the reason why over and over again. Next time show your students why they have to brushing is so important. 1.) Show students a hard boiled egg. 2.) Ask them, "Why do you think there is a shell around the egg." 3.) Let the students respond. Make sure they come to the conclusion that the hard shell protects the egg. 4.) Now give them you best smile and say, "See my teeth? Just like the egg my teeth are protected. Enamel protects my teeth the same way the shell protects what is inside the egg." 5.) Pour two cups of vinegar into a large jar. 6.) Have a student place the egg in the jar. 7.) Replace the lid on the jar and place the jar in a safe place for student observation. 8.) Ask the students to predict what they think will happen to the egg. 9.) Write the students response on a large piece of paper that will be hung in your room. 10.) When 2 days have passed, slowly and gently remove the egg from the jar. 11.) Allow each student to look at the egg and compare their predictions with the results. Conclusion: Tell the class that the vinegar caused the shell of the egg to break down and become soft, the same way that tooth enamel is damaged by acid and bacteria in the mouth. Brushing every day is the only way to keep this from happening. Hand out a large tooth for the children to write a sentence and draw a picture to illustrate why teeth brushing is important. See ya, I am off to brush my teeth.
