Cheers to Wedding Time!!!

Two of my greatest friends got married this summer.  First up was my college roommate, (us below 13 years ago)
I was Matron of Honor in her wedding...  I was also very sick on her wedding weekend with an evil stomach bug.  But you can't tell from the pictures!  God helped me get through all the important parts.
Then my girlfriend Kristi (whom I have known since I was six and she was 2).
Aren't we the cutest in our dress-up?  Had an awesome time at her wedding!  It was so hot, but so much fun.  I got to see an old friend who I haven't seen in years (since my wedding - 14+ years ago) ...  Cool thing is that we were able to pick up right where we left off.  Don't you love friendships like that??  You can go for years without talking and still feel a strong connection when you meet again.  Here are the three of us. It's amazing how quickly time goes by.  It feels like yesterday I was playing Barbies with these girls.  Memories are wonderful things and really make you think of all the blessings you are given in a lifetime.

My friends - past and present have been and are marvelous gifts from God.
He selects them GOOD!!!
Here's my little crafty treat for my girls... I personalized a bottle of my favorite bubbly...  I just made a label with an Irish Wedding Blessing on it & pictures from their facebook page.  Printed it and wrapped it around the bottle.
Don't you love Weddings?  I do!

Hello, I am Home Decor Challenged!!!

My name is Colleen, I am Home Decor Challenged...  What's your problem?

So I have begun the ever painful process of painting the kitchen/family room.  They are attached so it makes it even more painful than just doing the kitchen.  I love a finished product, I just hate the mess you have to make to get there.  It is a lot of blue tape around cabinets and the idea of pulling out appliances to paint behind them makes it more difficult.  Not to mention kids...  How the heck does anyone get anything done with kids around???  Yes, you can put them in front of the TV or make them read...  but that only lasts so long.  Paint can open and you find yourself playing a board game with a bored kid and realize...  Opps, left the open can of paint by the blind dog's dish...  U-huh ='s big mess to clean up!!!

Then there are the three days a week when I have 2 hours to myself, kid-free time.  Some people that work would say, "man you are so lucky you can have ALL that TIME to yourself."  Hey people, two hours is not that much!  Plus with volunteer obligations, you go from six hours a week to two...  Then of course there is the home business to run (but somehow people don't count that)...  Phewwww....  good thing I have a blog to vent on...  Let's get back on track...  Home Decor is what this post is really about...

I wanted to live on the edge and go crazy with color but I came out of the paint store with creams and tans. Truthfully, my colors look awfully similar to what is already on the walls in the two rooms I will repaint.  But, it looks a little dirty and this will clean things up!!!   I am just not brave...  perhaps I will be when I paint my bedroom!  No one sees that!  I suck at home decor.  I admit it, I am home decor challenged.  Give me a computer and I will make you a crazy good lesson plan!  Give me a paint swatches and I go all boring!!

What's is your area of expertise and your challenged areas???

A Handshake from Heaven

My son will make his First Holy Communion in a few weeks.  Hard to believe that the little baby dressed in white for baptism is NOW the huge eight year old I see before...  People, say that days last forever but the years fly past.  It is so true!!!

It's crazy scary to think in a flash he will be sixteen and I will be blogging about the scary world of having a teenager...

If you know me, you know I love a good children's book and whenever something is going on, I try to find a book to read to my kids.  Like when we were having my daughter we read tons of big brother books.  Or when I potty trained my kids, we read every child's book on potty time.  When my kiddos were in a wedding, I found a great children's book to match.  You can find a children's book to go with any topic. Of course we have every going to Kindergarten book made. Children's books make great cards!  I would much rather spend ten dollars on a great book than six dollars on a card someone will throw away...  Thus, I have been reading lots of books on First Communion.   I found one that really touched me and I knew this would be the one I would share with my son the night before his First Communion.

It is called a Handshake from Heaven.  My first read through the book equalled tears...  It is beautifully illustrated and has such a warm feeling that comes with it.  The text is simple and easy to read.  This book helps explain how we touch God every time we accept the Eucharist from our priest, pastor, or Eucharist minister.  "The book talks about how we touch God when we hold those we love and when we touch his gifts (flower, butterfly, puppy). But when we receive the Eucharist, God opens Heaven's door each and every time. And nowhere else on earth can we touch a part of Heaven, except in the Eucharist. And someday, when God chooses, He will reach down and touch our hands once more, and this time, He will hold on tight. He'll walk us through Heaven's door and hold our hands forever because we chose to touch Heaven while we lived on His earth, every time we went to Communion." The whole concept of touching God through the Eucharist as a preliminary experience to joining God in Heaven was just beautifully done.

If you are looking for a "touching" book to give to a child who will be making their first communion, I suggest this one and I have read quite a few.

Whine??? No... Wine? Yes!!!!

When my son was little, little -- around age two he did not talk much at all!  We had him tested and he received speech therapy for a few years.  Those few years when he did not talk as well as his peers was really hard on me  Hell on me...  Not to mention his need to use his body instead of his words made playdates a nightmare...  Thank God for Wine!  Not that I am promoting alcoholism...  Just a glass to settle the nerves.  Great medicine (if you are over 21)!!  Don't judge me, LOL!

Fast forward to age 8 and my drive home tonight  with him from his Piano lesson.  I found myself  listening to him talk whine about how it was unfair that he had to go straight to piano, come home do homework, and then go again to Basketball...  Him whining...  "What, mom I haven't played the Wii in three days.  Can I please play it when we get home?"  Me, "No, because your homework will not get done!"  Repeat about three times until mom starts yelling and wishing said child could not talk...  I have to remind myself of the time he was 2, 3, and 4 years old and how dealing with his lack of any type of speech was so hard.  Back then I wished he would whine.  Any kind of conversation would have been nice.  Now, thank God he talks like a typical 8-year old boy.  I just need a glass of wine to deal with the whining now.

I declare today...  Wine Day!!!  Join me for a virtual glass, would you?  Here are the choices...

So what should I choose???  I have tried three of these in the past.  I buy wine based on the cute name of it or if the label is cute.  I have found some great wines with this little rule.  What's your favorite wine?  Are you a wine snob or will any do?

Cheers bloggy friends!!!

Sorry, I do not bleed black and gold... & Steelers Balls!

I moved to the Pittsburgh area at age five and managed to grow up without being a huge Steelers fan...  However, my brother was one year old when we moved here and he is a HUGE fan!  Here he is tailgating before the Steeler win this weekend.  Somehow he manages to get tickets to most games from various girls he hangs out with.
Me - I am a girlie-girl and really never liked sports.  I remember once in high school pretending to like the Steelers because I liked a guy who loved them.  Quickly I realized that I did not understand the sport of football and this guy wasn't worth learning it for.  I moved on.  However, I do enjoy watching Hockey and I love the Penguins!  I often get mad at Pittsburgh fans who forget about the Pens until football season is over or if the Steelers aren't doing well.

So along comes my future husband... A Vermont Native who grew up with the religion of Dallas Cowboys.  He is a loyal die hard Cowboys fan.  Once when I was in college and he was visiting me he was forced to attend a Superbowl party where Dallas and the Steelers would go head to head...  Let's just say he almost threw an annoying bandwagon Steelers fan girl up against a wall when she was trash talking his team... and if you know my husband, this is totally out of character for him.  But he loves his Cowboys and can't stand people who talk trash about them when they don't know a thing about football.  Some thought once we were married I would become a Cowboys fan...  Naaaahhhhh, just don't like football.  Truthfully, I leave the room when the Cowboys are on.  It is like a new man comes out of my husband.  He gets crazy.  My kids even know you don't talk to Daddy when the Cowboys, Penguins, or Red Sox are on!

My son is torn...  does he give into peer pressure and become a Steelers Fan or does he follow Daddy and become a Cowboys fan.  I think peer pressure is winning...  This week he asked me to dig out his Steelers shirt that my brother gave him for school on Friday.  He did not want to be the only kid without a Steelers Shirt on.  Even my daughter comes home from school with "Steelers crafts" she makes with her class.  "Propaganda" says my husband with a slight smile.

Me - I want the Steelers to win for the many people I know that are fans and for the fact that shopping time in Pittsburgh is awesome when the Steelers are on.  No lines and no one is out on the roads till game time is over.  When the Steelers win, the town is in a better mood and people are just happier.  You just have to live in Pittsburgh to understand the Steelers religion...

Anyhow, I jumped on the bandwagon this weekend and made a cute dessert Steelers style.  I dipped oreo balls in yellow chocolate and made Steelers balls.  Yummy...  Here is the recipe;
  • 8 ounces softened cream cheese or whipped cream cheese
  • 18 ounces package of Oreo cookies, crushed (crush the entire cookie- don't remove the filling!)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
Mix cream cheese with electric mixer until fluffy. Add the crushed Oreos and beat on high until well mixed. Chill for at least 2 hours in the freezer. Then roll Oreo cookie mix into one inch Oreo Balls.
Next, melt the chocolate chips and shortening with a double boiler or in the microwave.
Dip the Oreo balls completely into the melted chocolate using tongs or a toothpick.
I used yellow chips for these.
Put on wax paper. After the Oreo balls harden, keep them in the refrigerator.
Makes about 3 or 4 dozen Oreo Balls, depending on the size

During the game I talked and ate and maybe watched a total of 10 minutes of the game...

Teachers, I have some football ideas for you here!  Like this:

So, do you love the Steelers?  Do you jump on the bandwagon when you hometown team is winning?

Our Dog is Blind...

A picture of our 9+ year old Lab Mix at our last trip to Vermont.  She has loved the snow since she was a baby and still does...
"Your dog is blind, she maybe has about 5% sight in one eye." - The Vet told us this and we couldn't understand it...  She gets around our house fine, she can even jump up on the beds...  She barks when someone walks a dog by our house.  She still takes a good walk on a leash.  Yes, she bumps into a few odds and ends, but she is just getting old, right?

When we took her on our trip to Vermont last week we realized she is in fact blind and relies on her smelling and hearing to get around.  She was a mess when we got to our destination.  At one point we had to carry all 55 pounds of her around the house because she was bumping into everything.  She just wanted to sit in one place and not move...  It's amazing that she does so well at home and has her environment memorized.  It's just sad to know that our family dog is getting old and someday won't be here.  When we first got her years ago at the New Jersey shelter she was a crazy dog that had been returned to the Shelter two times by previous adopters.  They couldn't handle her energy or the fact that she was a Houdini Dog of sorts...  she could escape any crate, even ones you bungee jumped shut.  When our first baby came along she suddenly seemed to mature and even took first place in her doggie training class.  She loves our kids... Our kids love her and she has proved to be the greatest pet to have around young children.  Sometimes I forget to be thankful for her and just wanted to give a shout out about my furry child.

 Hug your doggy today!

Why I Gave Up Store SHopping on Black Friday!

This year I decided with help from my non-shopping husband to stay home on Black Friday and do my shopping online on Thanksgiving and Black Friday!  Did you know that all the deals you get in the store can be had online if you have quick fingers, and do lots of refreshing of the desired item...  We got a great-super-fantastic deal on a computer package this season.  I also saved about 200 dollars on my children's Christmas presents.  I got my parents a high sought after electronic for $100 cheaper than regular price.  I saved in the comfort of my home.  Here comes the but....

Shopping Online this black Friday has been easy and I have gotten some great deals... but something in me misses the rush of pushing and shoving and grabbing items out of the other shoppers’ hands.  Plus I love to people watch on this day...  Last year I was in Vermont and headed out at 2am and returned with a coffee maker and a My Little Pony that I later returned!!!  I did however realize I may be a little sick in the head... I would do mean things like see a lady looking at the last Zhu Zhu pet and grab it before she could... I would then walk around the store and relocate the most wanted item in the underwear department... I then realized that black Friday was turning me evil!  Not only was it turning me evil, I would buy things I did not need because peer pressure was getting to me...  Why did everyone rush to get that coffee maker, I needed one too... NO!  Thoughts would float in my head...  "Look, I have seen six people with a special edition My Little Pony, I must have one."  I would then wait in the long line and join in long conversation with other shopping strangers about the next spot to hit for yet another item that was not on my list!

So now I am online with my cup of coffee, in my PJ's getting great deals on my couch...  Later my son and I will do some mother-son bonding at a Paint a Plate venue with some of his old friends.  I will see all those shoppers pulling their hair out and a small part of me will be a little jealous that I did not get to join in the fun this year.

I"m Not Lucky... Just Blessed!

"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough." Oprah Winfrey
Gotta love Oprah...  Did you see her last two favorite things shows?  Friday's show was my favorite because my Aunt Sandy was on the show!  I lived vicariously through her.  Here is her local news cast telling about the show;

I am very Thankful that my Aunt had this opportunity.  She is a good person who does good things for others and it is always fun to see the good girl win!!

Happy Thanksgiving Eve to you all.  I am so Thankful that my kids pulled out the GeoTrax today and played so well that I got the house all cleaned.  I also made awesome Bourbon Stuffing (that I have eaten way too much of already and it isn't even Thanksgiving), homemade cranberry sauce via Food Network, Sweet Potatoes, and Green Bean Casserole.  I'll finish it all up in the AM and family and friends will arrive here at 1:00 for some appetizers via Tastefully Simple!!!  O, and did I mention I also ran two miles and did a killer 30 minute Kettleball class with my girlfriend, Leslie.  Best part was that the instructor talked about his Thanksgiving Feast while beating us with exercise.  I learned that a fried turkey has the same nutritional value as a baked one if you throw away the skin.

I am very Thankful for my life, I am truly blessed with a great family and awesome friends.  I hope you find the little blessings in your life daily and remember to thank God for even the smallest of happy treats in your life.  Happy Turkey day you all...  I leave you with this...

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

Moo... It is Monday!

Wahhhhoooo...  I feel like I may be over the hump!  I increased the protein in my diet over the last few weeks and increased my calories (yes eating more) and over those two weeks I lost 2.5 pounds (steady 26 pound loss).  So I am hoping this tweak to my diet will be what I need!

This article tells us how protein helps with weight loss.

So new motivation in the color blue.... Want to see????

DRUM ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!

O, God help me...  I have to wear this dress in June in a size smaller than I am now!!!  I am the Matron of Honor in one of my best friends weddings.  This dress sure looks good on the girl in the picture...  My husband of course loves the dress...  I think he thinks if I put it on, I will look like that.  Unfortunately, I did not get to try it on because they did not have my size in the store models...  But we got to see it on one of the bridesmaids who is probably a size 2.  It  has nothing to hide one of the most hated parts of my body....  MY ARMS.  If you know me, you have never seen me in a tank top, right?  Now you know why.  It could be 100 degrees and I would still not wear a tank top unless I was running.  Also, let's face it...  I have no boobs!  What the heck will hold this dress up?  Wish me luck!  Please pray it will zip up and my fat won't flap in the wind!  I will share a picture of me in this dress after the June Wedding!  Thank God for Boot Camp!
Goals this week:

Fluids...  Protien... Calories... 3 - 4 days boot camp and 2-3 days of running!!!  Hope to be down 2 more pounds by next week.

Some Gave All and All Gave Some!

If you haven't listened to this song, you need to today!

Happy Memorial Day to All Who Have Served and To Those that Gave Some and Some who Gave All!  I was a Navy wife for the first six years of my marriage and I know what a hard life it can be on the families of those that serve.  Here's picture of my husband serviing on The US Alabama 731's 50th patrol.  He is somewhere in the 5 of the 50.  I am very proud of his service and proud of all who serve to protect our country and keep us free!!!

Is that a Broccoli book or Twinkie Book on Your Summer Reading List?

So what do you prefer to read??? Do you like Broccoli books or Twinkie Books the best? Or do you like a mixture of the two? Ok, you may be going, “huh?” Let me explain: back when I first started teaching one of the veteran teachers (Mrs. Boyton – Silver Ridge) made a comment that stuck with me forever. She said she was tired of reading Broccoli books and needed to open a Twinkie Book. She defined a Broccoli book as a book you read to gain new knowledge or learning something from; like, a teaching theory book, a self-help book, or a parenting book. These books are good for your brain, like broccoli is good for your body. The Twinkie book is a book that is a story you read for pure enjoyment, you don’t gain any new knowledge from it, you just enjoy it. Like a Twinkie, it is yummy and not necessarily good for you. It is an indulgence for your mind. I just loved this way of explaining books!

I am mostly a Broccoli book kinda gal! I read some Twinkie books here and there, but Broccoli books are my kind of book. I have been getting together a few books I want to read this summer and guess what, they are all Broccoli books. They happen to be parenting books and one Teacher knowledge type of book. My choices are:

No one suggested this one...  Mom’s Everything Book for Daughters.

It just looked like my kind of book and one I can keep around for the years.  I just read the first chapter and really enjoyed it.  Here is what the back of the book tells us:
"From the whimsical to the heart-to-heart, here is a potpourri of the best, most usable, fun ways to connect with your daughter as you face the issues that concern her together. From helping her enjoy her appearance, to dealing with physical changes and sex, to becoming a lifelong learner, this book is full of frank advice as well as great ideas for

· Chick Chats: Conversations that draw you closer and help her think through an issue · Just for Fun: Whimsical ideas that’ll make you the coolest mom in the universe! · Rave Reviews: Recommended reading your daughter will love (really!) · God, Mom, and Me: Discussions over Scripture that will help you both keep God in the center of the picture · And a whole lot more! "

This next one my girlfriend is reading the girl version of and it sounded really great... sooooo   I decided to get Bringing Up Boys!

If you read the review of this book on Amazon, you will see that he has some very conservative views of things.  It will be interesting to read this and share it with my husband (one of the world's biggest conservatives) as I read.

This next one has been on my shelf for a few months and I have cracked it and it looks great...  Plus an added bonus is that I know the author.  She was one of my college professors who taught an awesome class called Teaching Literature.  I do believe that her class is one of the classes I learned a great deal from while in college.

Many of her approaches and suggestions I used in my classroom and use with my son.  I actually saved my notes from this class and used them in my real classroom.  This book is Toolkit for Teachers of Literacy!

So that's my summer reading list...  What kind of books do you like?  Are you a Twinkie kind-a reader or a Broccoli Lov-a?

Busy Fighting Cancer!

Lance Armstrong once said, “If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up or fight like hell.” Lance Armstrong obviously didn’t give up. He fought with vigor and unstoppable belief in his recovery. Thank you to all who came to the Peters Relay for Life 2010 and showed your HOPE! Whatever part you played, if you were there or made a donation to the event you made a difference and should be proud of yourself!

I know that I haven't posted in a bit.  If you are a Moo.....  It's Monday Fan, you may think I gave up on diet and exercise.  I didn't!  After only four hours of sleep Saturday night, I still got up for Katie Page Boot Camp at Relay.  It was awesome and those inch worm abs & the millions of squats Katie had us do have me hurting today!  I should be back with Moo....  It's Monday regular posts next week.  I have just been busy being the Committee Online/Technology Chair for the Peters Township Relay for Life that finally happened this weekend.  We start planing this in December of 2009 and have meetings all through 2010 until the day of the event in May.  It's time consuming all year; but, in May especially... but worth it when your event goes off without a glitch!  So far our community has raised over $77,000+ total.  I also was a team member of an AWESOME team that raised about $3,000 so far.  Online we have raised about $13,000 which I am extremely happy with and beats out any other online years for any Peters Township Relay for Life.   Whhhhhhhhhhooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopppppppppp!!!!!!!!

The weather couldn't have been more perfect for this event.  You can see in the first picture above (taken by my friend Kristi), the weather was AWESOME.  God definitely shined his light down on our fight!  If you haven't been to a Relay to just walk the track, you NEED to find one in your area and go out with the family.

"The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated."

Teams walk or run the track for 24 hours.  The goal of each team is to have at least one team member on the track for a 24 hour period.  This signifies that those with cancer fight it 24 hours a day!  However, you do not need to have a team to come to a Relay event.  It's a family fun day filled with games, food, prizes, and entertainment all to support the American Cancer Society.  Bring your family out to check one out!  You can learn more about Relay here!
Thank you to KT Photography for the use of these photos.  Please visit KT Photography here to see more!  If you are local to the Pittsburgh area, Kristi is an affordable photographer.  Her pictures are unique and always amazing!

What I am up to Today!!!

8+ weeks of training!  When I started three miles was about all I could do without stopping.  Today I will attempt to run 10 miles without stopping.  If you read regularly, you may be tired of reading about my race day!  If you are one of my everyday friends, I know I have been annoying about this race.  SORRY AND THANKS!  A special thanks to those who laced up their shoes and joined me in a run on the trail or through the neighborhood!  I promise after my Moo Monday post, I will stop talking bragging about the fact I am going to run in a 10 mile race.  Something I never thought I would do or want to do!   My parents are driving hours to see me race too.  I feel like I am back in high school playing in a volleyball tournament or swim meet!  Still, I am glad they will be there.

Right now, Friday, they say thunderstorms on the list for Sunday's race.  I will be so bummed if with all this training this doesn't happen and I don't run the 10 mile race.  ugh!  (My girlfriend said that the I should think positive and remember that the thunder should make me run faster to get it over with. - Thanks J.S...  We should all take her advice and try turning negative thoughts into positive ones!)

Anyhow, thank you to everyone for the kind words and support!  How the heck can I be so lucky...  I run my first race and I am showered with cards, kind words, and even flowers and cookies!  I like this running thing.  If I ever run a marathon, gift cards will be excepted.  I am kidding!  Really!!!  I have the best friends in the world.  I am one lucky gal!  Thanks God!

Cheers!

"Whether you believe you can or believe you can't, you're probably right."  -Henry Ford

"Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself."  -William Faulkner

"Anybody can be a runner. We were meant to move. We were meant to run. It's the easiest sport." --Bill Rodgers

"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run." --John Bingham

I'm Giving Up Facebook for lent!

Giving up chocolate, candy, alcohol etc for Lent...what about that 21st century semi addiction Facebook???

I thought about it last year and blogged about it too.   I was weak then and gave up Diet Coke instead.  This year as I sat down thinking up what I should give up...  I started to think of some of my favorite things;

Diet Coke - Gave that up weeks ago to clean up my diet...
Chocolate - Really hardly eat that anyhow now that I am working on being clean.
Blackberry - Not that strong!
Magazines - Naaahhhh!!!
Swearing - Don't do that very often.
Drinking - Don't really do that either.
Hmmmm.  Facebook - on that silly site way too much.  Plus I once called it a Black Hole in my life and really it is.  I read this blog article and it made me really think and wonder what life would be like without my Facebook Vice?

This is like a little experiment in seeing if I get more done this way.  How many times have I thought I was going to get the laundry done and ended up on Facebook???    A few too many!  It will be interesting to see if I get more done now that I am Facebook free till Easter.  I hear that giving up Facebook is a popular/trendy thing to do. People even give you tips on how to give it up!   I am joining the trend.  It will be hard for me as I do LOVE Facebook!  I will be wondering what all my Facebook Buds are up to and probably miss out on a lot of the fun Facebook chatter.  Still, It will be a challenge and a break that I need.

Have you ever given up Facebook for Lent or just because?  Did your to-do list improve?  Was it hard?

Here's a few interesting links I found on the subject:
http://www.charliewrites.com/life-without-facebook
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-512535/Are-Facebook-And-ruining-life.html

If we are Facebook friends, you will need to email or call me if you need me.  I'll let you all know how life without Facebook goes in a future post.
